Although depression may be more common among women, men also get depressed. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, at least six million men in this country suffer from depression each year. Those affected should not try to dismiss their conditions or neglect treatment out of embarrassment because the risks of doing so are potentially life threatening. Not only does depression increase the risk of serious health problems such as high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke, it is also the leading cause of suicide. Men are four times more likely than women to take their own lives. Depression is more than simply feeling sad and unmotivated. It is a health problem that can be effectively treated.
